Artist Statement
My work investigates the fragmentation of filmic imagery in relation to subjective experience and memory. When attempting to recall moments past, they can often be supplemented through the ‘screen-images’ produced in films. Memories exist in a constant state of transformation and never truly re-appear as they were once experienced. It is this lucid character of memory that is the focus of my practice, placing the emphasis on its transformative nature.
I am currently working on a project called ‘Still Series’ as part of my final MFA examination. It consists of fifty small iPad-sized oil paintings on canvas paper, each framed with a white border. These will be displayed in a grid format filling an entire wall, giving them a cinema screen aesthetic. The images appear to be part of a single film narrative, yet the connection to an actual film will remain ambiguous. The objective is to question the role these artificial moments play in shaping the fragmented details of the viewer’s own past experiences.
