STREAM: Coming True by Guards
When it comes to pop music, my tastes skew towards the left of center. Whether it be buried under mountains of fuzz, tinged with psychedelia, drenched in reverb or warped with electronic warbles, the last decade has found me drawn to the type of pop that takes a little bit of patience to break through, songs where the hooks aren’t quite as obvious as what’s typically heard on terrestrial radio. The only problem with spending so much time in this particular area of the pop pool is that, every once in awhile, I become highly susceptible to one of those straightforward radio songs. The ones where you hear just about everything there is to hear on the first listen. Nothing new will reveal itself on repeat listens, but by golly you just can’t help but listen to it again. And again and again. A song like Guards’ “Coming True”. It’s a song so simple, with a hook so perfectly streamlined and immediate, so highly infectious, there’s little you can do but sit back, press repeat, and let it worm it’s way through your frontal lobe.
