Zimoun – Sound and Motion Sculptures
25 prepared dc motors
Zimoun, born in 1977, is a self taught artist who lives in Berne, Switzerland. Though he is known above all as a sculptor of sound, a sound and acoustics artist, his work is visually haunting and compelling. These stills and photographs are delicately beautiful and stand alone as art works, independent of sound or motion.
30, 000 plastic bags and 16 ventilators
5 pvc hoses, compressed air
450 prepared pendulum motors (Untitled Sculptures – Pe Lang)
49 prepared vibration motors, (Untitled Sculptures – Pe Lang)
97 polysiloxane hoses, compressed air
Zimoun’s sound sculptures and installations are graceful, mechanized works of playful poetry, their structural simplicity opens like an industrial bloom to reveal a complex and intricate series of relationships, an ongoing interplay between the «artificial» and the «organic». He is interested in the artistic research of simple and elegant systems to generate and study complex behaviours in sound and motion. He creates sound pieces from basic components, often using multiples of the same prepared mechanical elements to examine the creation and degeneration of patterns.
The video below is a compilation of several shorter “motion sculptures”, beautiful and fascinating both to watch and to listen to.
