Artist Statement
My usual mode of work is spontaneous and intuitive. The narrative quality of each of my paintings becomes apparent during the process of drawing and painting, and via various additive and subtractive processes, including layering, sanding, and scraping. My “portraits” (of people, animals, trees, and objects) have a surreal candy-land exterior full of pastel-colored innocence, which only hints at an undercurrent of darkness and mystery. In addition to “elevating the mundane,” I aim to imbue everyday objects/subjects with an extra sense of humor, emotion, narrative, and strange familiarity. I enjoy experimenting with color and composition, storytelling, and shifts in scale and perspective.
